Even if this movie was not based on true
events, the plot would still be very compelling. That it was, made it
that much more so. Added in were great performances and we had a
situation where we felt strongly for these complex characters. It
really was that dramatic, especially with the great set design and
costuming. Pacing too was terrific here as the story kept rolling
smoothly, though sacrificing a little on some very minor plot points.
Smart move. I just wish more movies like this got made.
We got treated to a few great extras here such as two
behind-the-scenes featurettes, five deleted scenes, and a beautiful
photo montage set to music and dialog from both the film and the set.
Of course, there were also the obligatory trailer and cast and crew
info. The commentary from director Mike Newell was kind of skimpy
though, not really hitting any interesting notes.
It's too bad in this gangster genre, filled with so many other greats,
that this one probably got lost in the shuffle.
