Truly spectacular. Stunningly beautiful
martial arts sequences were brought out with wonderful visual choices
and subtle sound design. A first that I've seen in this genre. While
the action was definitely the main draw, the story too shined in it's
achievement. A complex tale of love, jealousy, duty and betrayal was
relayed in a relatively simple way. However, that desert romance bit
in the middle nearly knocked me into unconsciousness. Another
disappointment came when supporting plot points were forfeited to move
the story along. I probably wouldn't have appreciated the boring
alternative, but it just seemed every new scene required some
acceptance of disbelief. This though, was pretty constant throughout,
so by the end, one may not even notice (or care, after all, this was
fantasy).
This DVD only had a few extras. A making-of featurette was nicely
done, though a blurb for the soundtrack at the end felt out of place.
A short interview with star Michelle Yeoh was also rewarding to some
extent. Also included were two trailers, filmographies, and a lengthy
photo montage. A commentary from director Ang Lee and writer/producer
James Schamus was a fun listen since they were constantly cheerful and
informative.
Elegant to the end, I still found it most engaging as the
extraordinary action flick it was.
