I'm not a big anime fan but upon first
glances, I did have certain expectations for this one, namely a
throwback to the days of action and adventure, before the dreary
philosophical touch moved in. And for awhile, I was satisfied. Sharp
animation, stylized action sequences and plenty of attitude. Then it
happened, the movie stalled. Plot got muddled and characters became
introspective. Although it doesn't sound like much, nor did it last
that long, it was enough to take me out of the movie. Recovery simply
wasn't possible. The remaining drive to the end, while action packed,
felt like such a chore.
The bland extras found here included, six short featurettes on
characters and the production, two music videos, four storyboard
comparisons, text biographies of the main characters and several pages
of conceptual art. No commentary track, but it's worth mentioning the
film could be heard in English as well as Japanese.
A nice stretch where anime did what anime does best. Then it fell into
the crapper.
