I didn't think much of this when I first
saw it on VHS five years ago. I don't think much of it now on DVD.
It's probably a generation thing. Seeing as I grew up with aliens on
TV and at movies, I just didn't feel the impact of this movie like so
many others. While performances were quite good (especially the
kid's), and with effects which still stand well today, my big problem
with the film was that I found the pace painfully slow. But that may
be a generation thing too.
I expected more from this two-disc set. We were treated to a new
making-of documentary that was basically one and half hours of boring
interviews. While some of the information was interesting, most of it
wasn't. There was also a 1977 featurette that was only five minutes
long with no real entertainment value. Deleted scenes were always
pretty cool, but like the movie, I found them pretty damn slow. The
only other extras found were a few filmographies, and two theatrical
trailers. Looking for a commentary track? You're out of luck.
With a good picture quality along with a strong DTS track, it really
didn't look like it was originally from 1977. Unfortunately, there
were other aspects of the film that did date it.
