The most serious of Kevin Smith opuses, this one contained some of the funniest dialogue my ears have ever witnessed. With a relatively simple plot, it's the performances that were the key as they showed both great humor and fine drama. My only complaint, was the lack of zany physical comedy that usually accompanies Smith's films. Because it's so word driven, this movie could almost pass itself off as an emotionally deep arty film. This lack of variety lent the film some credibility as the subject matter was indeed more poignant. Luckily, the crude laughs made it's presence felt and balanced the movie nicely.

Typical with Smith DVD's, this one too had great extras bundled in, although this time it was somewhat limited. Ten deleted scenes were included along with short (and funny) introductions to set them up. There was also an amusing look at some out-takes and the movies trailer. For the accustomed ensemble commentary, we have Smith, producer Scott Mosier, stars Ben Affleck and Jason Mewes, associate producer Robert Hawk, Miramax executive Jon Gordon, and View Askew historian Vincent Pereria. With most of the talking done by Smith, Affleck and Mosier, this group provides terrific insight and laughs as they joke with one another.

Without that diversity of jokes, I enjoyed this one less than Smith's others. That said, this one was likely more acceptable to a wider audience, still being a wonderfully funny movie.

The Movie: 8/10
The Extras: 5/10

Recommendation: Rent This One
