This big budget flick really was just an effects laden one man play. Novel idea, but there really wasn't that much of a story to tell. The most exciting part, the plane crash, had to be the best executed one I've seen on screen. After that, when the character gets stranded on the island, the pace just slowed dramatically. While I can't say I was bored to unconsciousness, I also can't claim my attention was focused upon the scenes. Still, merit has to be given to their attempt to keep it realistic. And of course as always, director Robert Zemeckis delivers active visuals with fresh camera moves and seamless special effects. However, that's all just gravy for a bland meal.

This two disc set certainly had plenty of extras. On the second disc, we found a good making-of featurette, three shorter ones each focusing on specific concepts in the movie and an informative Charlie Rose interview with star Tom Hanks. An interesting section with six vignettes explained how special effects were integrated. There was also the obligatory trailers and TV spots, as well as concept art, a production photo montage, and story boards. The commentary, from Zemeckis and some of his crew, was found on the first disc, and while they provided plenty of anecdotes, they were mostly technical in nature, and of little interest.

While nothing that special now, I suspect decades from now, it will indeed be regarded as a classic for it's sheer boldness.

The Movie: 7/10
The Extras: 4/10

Recommendation: Rent This One
