Seemingly billed as a romantic comedy, I felt it was more of a light-hearted drama. In either case, it really was not a sports movie. Minor league ball is just a backdrop and we never got any baseball excitement. That said, this movie should still appeal to the sports buff in terms of the dynamic locker room relationships. While cute moments peppered the film, I wouldn't consider any of them as laugh-out-loud funny. The romance too seemed awkward since I didn't really spend that much time rooting for the guy to get the girl. The odd thing was, the sum of all parts ended up working well leaving me with fond memories of the film.

In this special edition, we got a decent making-of featurette, a very brief look at star Kevin Costner, and another short one on baseball's minor leagues. There was also a photo gallery and a section of trailers (for this and other romantic comedies). Of the two commentary tracks, one was provided by director Ron Shelton, who relayed his personal experiences with the game as well as filming anecdotes. The other one was from Costner and co-star Tim Robbins who genuinely enjoyed the film, the sport, and each other's company. I guess it's a credit to the film that they spent a lot of the time in silence watching the movie instead of reliving their antics to us.

Charming. This film adorably realizes the world of the minor league game, if not the on-field action.

The Movie: 6/10
The Extras: 3/10

Recommendation: Rent This One
