I thought they made smarter kid's movies these days. That's assuming of course this was indeed targeted at that young an audience. It's hard to blame Martin Lawrence for this calamity since he was still playing the same character he had been in all his movies. Instead, the entire premise was the culprit. Hadn't it been tried plenty of times before? I'm not sure modern man in medieval time ever worked as light comedy. What‘s new was playing the race card for laughs along with some slapstick. And there are yuks to be had, but nothing that remarkable. On a brighter note, kids will probably enjoy themselves enough. After all, it's still got that adventure angle.

With so many extras, I'm surprised they didn't market this DVD as a special edition. One behind-the-scenes featurette lasting almost nine minutes was quite good as was another on the subject of stunt work. Two others were much shorter, dealing with set design and choreography. The first was interesting, the latter, not. Also found were, two short and dull interviews with Lawrence, two minutes of unfunny outtakes, trailers for this and other Fox films, two storyboard comparisons and three deleted scenes, one of which was quite funny. A commentary track by director Gil Junger was informative to a point, but also annoying as he seemed happy with every aspect of the film.

While I am indeed one to find cultural comedy a riot (maybe more so than others), here it all just felt old.

The Movie: 3/10
The Extras: 3/10

Recommendation: See It If It's Free
