With one of the most mesmerizing trailers I had ever seen, this film amazingly exceeded even my expectations. A strong visual style served to enhance the end-to-end military action and a powerful score set up an intensely purposeful mood. But lacking many conventional storytelling traits, the plot did tend to feel like a glorified re-enactment. Although one-dimensional in that regard, this movie nonetheless remained entirely compelling. And that, is the hallmark of great films.

This three DVD set had an enormous amount of welcomed extras. Disc one had the movie, cast and crew filmographies and three illuminating commentaries. The first was mostly with director Ridley Scott, though producer Jerry Bruckheimer did have a few words as well on the production of the movie. The second touched on the story itself with author Mark Bowden and screenwriter Ken Nolan. The third one was from four veterans of the battle as they recounted their actual experiences. Each track was a worthwhile listen and were nicely indexed by topics discussed.

Disc two had production oriented extras including, a lengthy but terrific in-depth documentary on the making of the film, eight minor deleted scenes with text descriptions and an optional commentary, a shorter featurette on the city design, two storyboard comparisons with optional comments, a huge collection of design and production photos, several Bruckheimer photos and a look at an alternate opening title sequence, again with optional commentary.

The third disc held two informative gems, a marvelous History Channel presentation and a wonderful PBS episode dealing with the real event. Also on this disc were a clarifying timeline of the mission, a cool multiple camera look at the insertion scene with optional commentary, a music video, short video clips from three Q & A forums with various participants, poster concepts, the theatrical trailer and ten TV spots.

A more than worthy DVD set to complement this fine film.

The Movie: 10/10
The Extras: 10/10

Recommendation: One For The Library
