This was a tough one. On the one hand, I love the military action genre. On the other, I value plot realism in these kind of films. I can understand that plausibility needed to be set aside at times to sustain drama, but here scene after scene failed under scrutiny. It got to the point where I was no longer interested in our hero's predicament and just want the action, of which there was plenty. Performance-wise, Gene Hackman, as expected, was superb playing the authoritative figure. Owen Wilson however, just seemed out of place to me. Visuals were beautiful and special effects where done quite well, but stylistic choices really put me off by pausing the movie at parts that did not require emphasis. While they may have looked cool, it seemed their existence was due to that very reason. In the end, it's the flying bullets and huge explosions I really came to see. All other faults can be forgotten since they deliver in that regards.

The best extra on this disc has to be the seven deleted scenes. There isn't one I wouldn't have loved to stay in the final cut. Other material included a good but extremely short behind-the-scenes featurette, a trailer for Minority Report and an interesting look at one of the visual effects scenes. There were two commentary tracks. One, from director John Moore and editor Martin Smith was filled with information and another by producers John Davis and Wyck Godfrey dealt with their views, but really wasn't all that interesting.

It's no masterpiece, but quite good for what it was, heavily stylized military action.

The Movie: 6/10
The Extras: 6/10

Recommendation: Rent This One
