This epic mini-series was not only
unique for it's incredibly prominent production value, but for it's
uncommon presentation from episode to episode. While every part
followed the same characters and overall storyline, each were told
differently conveying several strong sub-plots. Such stylizations
created the subtle illusion of witnessing different experiences along
the way. But looking back, I much more appreciated how each serviced
the core plot. In the end, the whole just felt greater than the sum of
it's parts, however terrific each were. In terms of action and
effects, nothing short of big budget Hollywood features even came
close to matching the high tension and drama they helped deliver. This
was a TV series for which I gladly would have paid exorbitant ticket
prices to see on the big screen.
Sharply packaged in a tin, five discs carried the ten parts with a
sixth containing a wonderful documentary featuring interviews with the
real men portrayed on screen. This last disc also consisted of, an
acceptable making-of featurette, actor Ron Livingston's video diary of
boot camp training, a brief look at the Normandy premiere, a section
of video spotlights on several key characters, video
summaries/previews of each chapter, and a collection of production
photos. Due to the nature of the each episodes's different
presentation, some homework was also required on my part to connect
everything together. The "Field Guide" section, found on
each of the first five discs greatly helped with background
information to each character and episode as well as a glossary of
terms used throughout. Unfortunately, there were no commentary tracks.
A grittily realistic feel was only the byproduct of the true
achievement here, the powerful relaying of true experiences.
