This second installment to the prequels
succeeded in delivering the intense Jedi action fans have craved.
Here, even more computer effects were utilized, though not always
achieving seamlessness. The first third felt glaringly fake as the
clean environments brought out a stark contrast between actor and
background. Luckily, things became grittier as the story unfolded
leaving differences almost unnoticeable. But another annoying trait
did turn it's ugly head, the throw-away comedic lines. While endearing
before, it was just old and distracting in this film. What did work
well however, was the air of mystery in the plot. By bringing up
familiar characters and ideas from the original films, it not only
left me slightly confused, but more importantly, in awe wanting
resolution. Already I anticipate the next movie.
A set of two, the first disc held the film while the bonus materials
were found on the second. These extras included, three highly
informative featurettes (on computer characters, computer
previsualization, and sound effects), three brief ones (on overall
plot, the romance angle, and the action element), eight unique deleted
scenes with optional introductions, a set of twelve short web
documentaries (each terrific and on different topics), four impressive
trailers, twelve TV spots, a special effects breakdown montage, a
music video from composer John Williams, a trailer for "R2-D2
Beneath The Dome", a collection of captioned production photos,
some international posters, and a few outdoor posters. For an audio
commentary, a decent listen can be found along with the film on disc
one. It was voiced by writer/director George Lucas, producer Rick
McCallum, editor/sound designer Ben Burtt, animation director Rob
Coleman, and visual effects supervisors Pablo Helman, John Knoll, and
Ben Snow. Lucas spoke of the plot while the others brought more
technical insights.
With the action delivered a notch higher than it's predecessor, my
expectations were easily met. This is what Episode I should have been.
