What was it? A horror? An action flick?
A comedy? I don't know, but it sure was entertaining. To me, this was
the least scary of the trilogy (being really Evil Dead 3), though my
young age for the first two films probably played a factor. This movie
kind of goes off on a tangent from the earlier ones by relocating to
medieval times thereby adding a sci-fi spin on the series. With an
over-the-top performance and knee-slapping one-liners, star Bruce
Campbell was true to character and fans will forever love him for it.
From watching this version, I have to admit, I liked the cut-up
theatrical release more. This director's cut had a very long end
battle, and the epilogue wasn't as cute. Still, it's fun to compare, I
just wished they presented that other ending here as an extra.
Speaking of which, all we have here were four dull deleted scenes, as
well as an uninteresting option to view storyboards alongside the
movie. However, the commentary track was a delight, filled with great
amusing anecdotes. Delivered by Campbell, director Sam Raimi and
co-writer Ivan Raimi, their enthusiasm for the film was evident,
making it quite enjoyable to the listener.
While I can see how many would be turned off by the low-budget-y look
to the film, everyone should still enjoy time spent with this
hilarious hero.
