Never a big astronaut nut as a kid, I
was nonetheless taken with this film. Not only by the plot itself (the
real life quality helped), but also with it's nimble execution.
Several different points of view were nicely woven together to tell
everyone's story. While the technical jargon understandably was a
little intimidating, the gist got through to me clearly enough. And
then the power of scenes such as the takeoff sequence cemented my
enthusiasm. It left me in awe.
Along with one of the better making-of featurettes I've seen, this DVD
also had, cast and crew information, production notes as well as a
theatrical trailer. There were also two terrific commentary tracks.
Director Ron Howard provided a pleasantly informative one with details
about filming. The other was from the real life Jim and Marilyn Lovell
who brought a most precious resource, their memories.
As great as this movie was, I suspect some pre-existing interest will
be needed for full enjoyment.
