Now I'm not a big fan of anime. While
the genre always looked cool, it was the stories I found lacking or
confusing. Perhaps it's a cultural thing. However, this movie blew me
away when I first viewed it about 10 years go. Complex story,
captivating characters, imaginative environment, haunting score, and
vivid visuals all found their way into this definite masterpiece. One
nice touch was a great new dubbing into English. I couldn't bear to
focus on subtitles and miss out on the great animation.
This 2-disc special edition of course offered some extras. One neat
one was an option of having the movie's Japanese signs and graffiti in
the film translated into English. Filmed bonus material included were,
an interesting interview with director Katsuhiro Otomo, a corny
production featurette, a featurette on the soundtrack, interviews with
the restoration team, and of course teasers and trailers. Besides over
4500 stills of production material, there was also a glossary of terms
used in the movie. The latter I found mostly uninformative. No
commentary track was found.
This movie has now been marvelously restored for us to enjoy once
again.
