I liked this movie more when I
originally thought it was a serious spy flick. While it played like
one for a bit, ultimately, it was not. Instead, as opposed to an
ardent biopic, I saw a Hollywood drama designed to entertain. Built on
a semi-compelling biography, what made this movie distinctive were the
subtle special effects and the governing majestic score. Those two
aspects did well in creating a feel of wonderment in key scenes.
Without them, we'd just be left with convincing performances in a
disillusioned plot which unfortunately suffered due to the film's wide
recognition. What should have been a powerful turn of events was more
anticipated than astonishing.
Most of this two disc set's bonus material were found on the second
disc. Besides a pretty good making-of featurette, these included some
well polished shorter ones on topics such as the filmmakers, the
screenplay, casting of the leads, makeup, computer effects and the
score. There was also some video of John Nash with director Ron
Howard, and Nash at a Nobel Prize ceremony. Five storyboard
comparisons, Academy Awards footage, the trailer and promotional clips
for Universal products finished up this disc. Along with the film,
disc one contained about thirty minutes of interesting deleted scenes
as well as two commentary tracks from Howard and screenwriter Akiva
Goldsman. Each provided ample information on the production though
both also offered silent stretches. Also found on this disc were
production notes and cast and crew information.
Not extraordinary, but competent. Even though there's no message to be
gained, you felt like you received one.
