Remarkably, they pulled it off. It never
felt like a promotional vehicle, nor did the plot seem sugar coated.
It just came off as real. This smaller story managed to suck the
viewer into it and deliver a believable world unfamiliar to most.
Though several characters bordered on being over the top, they were
all interesting. Gritty visuals and strong music cues created a bleak
but inspirational mood befitting the film. Pacing was perfect, things
never lingered. The result was a cohesive and entertaining film.
For extras, there was a great making-of featurette, fun footage of
some rap battles, a section focused on the music, the theatrical
trailer, a music video, cast and crew information and production
notes. Sadly, no commentary here.
While slightly on the predictable side, this movie worked due to
strong storytelling and an aura of authenticity.
