A couple of nights ago, some friends asked me to recommend a movie. I recommended Love Actually. But they eventually talked me into recommending Stuck On You. Really, I didn't even recommend it. They asked me what I thought - I said it had a few funny moments - and they took that statement and ran with it. Personally, I think they really wanted to see Stuck On You to begin with and just wanted me to talk them into it.
In Stuck On You, Matt Damon and Greg Kinnear star as conjoined twins Bob and Walt Tenor. They are grown adults who are joined at the waist and who've never bothered to get separated due to the risk that one might not survive since they share a liver. So, they go about their lives and are quite successful at it. They own a popular burger joint, are stars of their hockey and baseball teams and they're generally well-known and well-liked in the community. One day, Walt gets the acting bug and the two set out for sunny Los Angeles with stars in Walt's eyes. Of course, it helps that Bob's internet lover lives on the west coast too. But then again, it doesn't help that she doesn't know about his "condition". To make a long story short, Walt becomes a Hollywood hit co-starring in a successful TV show with the ultra-bitchy Cher, Bob's heart is broken and unbroken by his e-girlfriend and the brothers come to a new realization about their relationship and about themselves as individuals.
I wonder if The Farrelly Brothers wish that "There's Something About Mary" weren't such a success. Because if I'll say one thing, it's this - Stuck On You was good, but it wasn't nearly as good as "Mary". And really, you can say the same thing about any other Farrelly movie. I guess it's a blessing and a curse.
For features, we get a rather bland commentary by the Bobby and Peter Farrelly. Besides the odd bit of trivia, the majority of the commentary deals with the brothers naming every single person who worked on the movie, and congratulating everybody on doing such a splendid job. This is one to avoid. Among the remaining special features, we get eight deleted/extended scenes (worth checking out), a featurette titled "It's Funny: The Farrelly Formula" which looks at archival interviews with the brothers and some of the stars they've worked with (including Jim Carrey, Jack Black, Jason Alexander, Gwyneth Paltrow, Renee Zellweger and Matt Damon) about why they movies they make are funny and about how they often walk the line between funny and tasteless. Also, your standard making-of featurette titled "Stuck Together: Bringing 'Stuck on You' to the Screen", a featurette about the film's makeup effects and finally some great bloopers from the movie. Altogether, we get a decent set of features and a nice addition to the overall DVD package.
If you're expecting another "Mary", do yourself a favor and don't. Stuck On You can't compare. On the other hand, if you're just looking for a bit of a chuckle, I'd have no problem recommending this movie. Avoid the commentary, be sure to check out "The Farrelly Formula" and you'll probably enjoy this disc.
