The release of Shrek 3-D came as a bit of a surprise. It was just over 3 weeks before the release of Shrek 2 that I first heard of it. But, when I got the DVD, I understood why - it's not a feature length production. Quite the opposite, actually. Running just 16 minutes, there's not a lot of Shrek here to enjoy. And what Shrek we do get is overshadowed by attempts to feature anything 3-D.
Shrek 3-D takes place somewhere between the original Shrek and the newly released Shrek 2. (Maybe they should have called it Shrek 1.5-D!) Anyways, Shrek and Fiona are newly married and heading out on their honeymoon. But before the ogre-action can begin, Fiona is kidnapped by one of Lord Farquaad's henchmen. Turns out that Farquaad is back as a ghost and he's out to steal the princess. So, Shrek and Donkey set out on an adventure to get her back. 3-D madness ensues.
If the kids love Shrek, I'm sure they'll like this one too. And the 3-D is an added novelty. However, as an adult and as a Shrek fan, I was a bit disappointed. Although all the voice cast returns for this flick, none of the magic is there. The jokes are gone, replaced by what I felt was cheesy 3-D. However, it's clear that this movie wasn't made for the story or for the laughs, but merely as a means to showcase Shrek in 3-D. And I guess if you look at it that way, the filmmakers managed to succeed.
There aren't any special features here, but you do get the option of watching either with or without the 3-D. Also, there's a couple of trailers - one for Shrek 2 and another for a Shrek 4-D theme ride at Universal Studios. I'm not quite sure what the fourth D is, but it didn't look too bad.
Shrek 3-D came as a double disc set - the first disc being the original Shrek, including all the original bonus features. Beware though - the original Shrek included here is the full frame version. Damn full frame! When are people gonna realize that widescreen is the way to go?!? Still - my kids like Shrek and I'm sure they don't really care - so I'm grateful to have anything at all.
So, if your kids love Shrek (and based on how green he pulled in opening weekend, they do), then Shrek 3-D may be of some interest. Just don't expect too much. The story is secondary, and with such a short running time, the value just isn't there.
