My kids liked this movie. That's my
endorsement for Piglet's Big Movie, the latest feature-length motion
picture based on a character from Winnie the Pooh. If you have kids,
and are selective about what your children watch, this movie is for
you. Wholesome family entertainment - not something you'll find too
much of these days. I brought my oldest daughter (3 years old) to see
Finding Nemo earlier this year. It was her first big screen experience
and there were definitely some scenes that frightened her. When we sat
down to watch Lilo and Stitch on DVD, although she liked it, there
were some scenes of questionable content (too much fighting) for me.
So with Piglet's Big Movie, the thing that I liked the most is that we
could sit down as a family and watch it together and not worry about
frightening the kids, or subjecting them to any violence. It's nice to
know that there is still such thing as family entertainment.
Piglet's Big Movie tells the story of how Piglet's friends come to
realize what a big part of their lives Piglet really is. The story
begins when Piglet disappears into the Hundred Acre Wood... Why?
Because his friends tell him that he is too small to help them with
their big plans. So to help find Piglet, they read his Book of
Memories, and in doing so, come to learn that they've been taking
Piglet for granted. They also learn to appreciate Piglet - even though
he is small, he often contributes in the biggest way!
For extras on this DVD, we are treated with the usual fare for Disney
DVDs. First a game, titled naturally - "Piglet's Book of
Memories". Easy to navigate, the user in the game goes through
the homes of Pooh, Rabbit, Kanga and Piglet to find the missing pages
of Piglet's book. It was pretty fun to do along with the kids. Next, a
feature titled "The World According to Piglet" where we look
back at some of the friends' adventures and what role Piglet played.
From the adventures we learn lessons like "True friends come in
many shapes and sizes" and "Courage doesn't come from being
big on the outside - It comes from being big on the inside". This
too was fun for the kids, but I didn't like how they referred to
adventures that weren't in the movie. We don't watch a lot of Pooh
around our hose to begin with, so looking back on adventures we've
never seen before was a little confusing for the kids. Another problem
with these two features is that the fun of them doesn't last very
long. After the kids have gone through them a couple of times, they
get bored with it. I really don't know what could be done to fix it -
it's just an observation. Next was a "Sing Along" feature
which was nice, but probably more suited towards children a bit older
than mine as it required read-along skills. Also available were DVD
ROM features, which included the option to print coloring pages from
Piglet's Book of Memories. One feature I would have liked to have seen
was the ability to go straight to the Carly Simon video that played
with the film's final credits. It's a catchy tune, and the kids really
enjoyed it as well - so much so that they didn't want me to turn it
off!
The film is presented in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound (also
available in French and Spanish) with a Family Friendly 1.66:1
Widescreen Aspect Ration (Enhanced for 16x9 Televisions).
So would I recommend this DVD? If you're the type of parent who is
concerned with what your child is watching, this disc is a must-own.
It teaches valuable lessons while keeping the child entertained. Plus,
the entertainment value is strong enough that you can watch it with
your child, like we love to do!
