Once Upon a Time in the Midlands was a movie I wanted to check out. I don't really know why - it's just one of those movies where I saw the trailer and it piqued my interest - and I like to think I have an eye for movie trailers. But, it was only okay. It wasn't really what I was expecting.

In the movie (from this point on I'll only refer to it as "the movie" since the title is too long to type over and over) Robert Carlyle plays a washed up bum of a criminal who is watching television one night and happens to catch his ex (Shirley Henderson) on a Sally Jesse-type talk show. On the show, her current boyfriend (Rhys Ifans) comes out and pops the surprise question - only she answers 'no'. So, Carlyle tries to weasel his way back into her life, much to the chagrin of everybody else in her life.

As I said, the movie wasn't really what I was expecting. It's advertised as a romantic comedy, but to tell the truth, it wasn't very romantic. And although there were some genuinely funny moments, it wasn't really comedic either. Maybe it's the British humor thing, but I didn't really find myself laughing too much.

That being said, the story was decent. And the acting - well it was the best thing the movie had to offer. Each of the actors performed strongly in their respective parts, and I'll give them credit for making the movie a lot better than it could have been.

For the DVD release of the movie, we don't even get any features. Just some previews for some similar titles, each of which looks entertaining in their own right, but after being wrong here, I'm beginning to wonder.

Maybe it's because the movie was neither romantic nor comedic - maybe it's because I was having trouble with the English accents - and probably because I was expecting something entirely different, in the end, just wasn't as good as I had hoped.

The Movie:  4/10
The Extras:  n/a
