I haven't seen too many dance movies, so Honey really wasn't on my must-see list. I don't even know why Honey is a movie. I can't help but wonder Who wants to see it? It's just strange how a movie like this gets made. Who makes it, and why? And forget those questions. An even more important question is this - why release it when they did. If you wanted it to succeed at all, why release it in theaters at Christmas? Why not at least wait until January (like Save the Last Dance) and dump it when the rest of the bad movies are released, to at least give it an outside chance at being a moderate success? Or why not late summer? That worked for Dirty Dancing and Coyote Ugly. Why December? I just don't understand.
In Honey, Jessica Alba plays Honey Daniels, a hip-hop dancer/community center dance teacher who has the talent and the passion to succeed - she just can't catch a break. Then all of a sudden, her dreams of becoming a music video choreographer come true when she's spotted by a video director at a dance club. From there, Honey is vaulted into the music business where she must come to terms with her new-found fame and leaving her old life behind. Throw in a few cameos, a lot of clichés, some decent dance moves and some toe-tapping tunes, and you've got Honey.
I'm sure that a lot more people are going to see this one on DVD than those who saw it in theaters. And for that DVD release, we've got a few special features for you to check out as well. First, there's a feature commentary with Jessica Alba and director Bille Woodruff. Woodruff is a music video director to begin with, so this film seems like a natural choice for him. The commentary is rather drab, but the two seem to have a good time, so I guess it isn't a total waste.
The featurette titled "Behind the Groove: The Making of Honey" is just that. Running just under eleven minutes, we get your basic behind the scenes feature complete with comments from the cast and crew. In "Make Your Move: Dance Like Honey", choreographer Laurie Ann Gibson tries to teach us some of the dance moves from the film. It almost seems like one of those cheesy exercise tapes, but if you're interested in dance, this might be worth checking out. Otherwise - steer clear. On top of these features, we get three music videos, a behind-the-scenes look at the making of Blaque's music video plus a number of deleted scenes and outtakes.
Sorry if I'm sounding harsh here. I guess there's an audience out there somewhere - it's just that I'm not in that audience. I guess if you're into dance or hip hop, or even if you're a rabid Jessica Alba fan, you might want to watch just for curiosity's sake. It's just not my cup of tea.
