A lot of people have said that Gigli is
the worst movie of the year. Hell, people who didn't even see it are
saying it is the worst movie of the year. There was so much talk about
how bad this movie was that I wanted to see it just to find out. So
when the DVD landed on my lap, I'll admit that I was a little curious.
So I popped it in the old player and trust me when I say - Gigli is
not as bad as everyone makes it out to be.
For those of you who haven't seen it (which is most of you) I'll tell
you a little bit about it. Affleck plays Larry Gigli (pronounce it
however you like - I really don't care), a gangster/mobster/hood who
screws up everything he does. Despite this shortcoming, he is given
the task of kidnapping the mentally challenged little brother of an
important political figure. Why? I'm not really sure on the details,
but that's the basic premise. Anyways, knowing his tendency to screw
everything up, he is assigned a partner - Jennifer Lopez. Her only
shortcoming is that she's a muff diver. Not really a problem in my
opinion, but when you're Gigli, and you have to share a bed with her -
it's a shortcoming. Anyways, the three of them spend some time
together, learn a little about each other, and themselves and it all
wraps up rather nicely. Throw in there a couple of decent cameos by
Christopher Walken and Al "Over the Top" Pacino and the
result is a movie that isn't as terrible as everyone says.
In the end, it's almost as if the negative reaction to the movie is a
direct backlash against the whole Ben/Jen thing. I mean, you couldn't
turn around this year without hearing about Ben or Jen or Ben and Jen.
And it all came to a boil with the release of Gigli. Everyone who was
just sick of the whole thing just trashed Gigli for everything it
represented. If Gigli had been released without the whole Ben/Jen
hoopla, it probably would have done much better. Sure, it was no work
of art, but it really wasn't that bad.
The DVD on the other hand, is pretty bad. Not necessarily bad, but
lacking. Just the movie? Couldn't they come up with anything else? I
remember hearing that when the tested the film with an audience, the
original ending was trashed and a new ending was shot. Couldn't they
have included the alternate ending? Something? Anything? Please?
The lack of special features aside, I would almost recommend checking
this movie out just to see for yourself that it isn't really that bad.
I only hope that the media hype of the whole Ben/Jen thing dies over
the next few months so their next movie together (Kevin Smith's
"Jersey Girl") doesn't suffer the same fate...
