This movie wasn't as bad as I thought it
was going to be. Sure, it still wasn't great, but not as bad as you
might expect. And why Disney insists on making inferior sequels is
beyond me. Why tarnish the reputation of the original with a sub-par
follow-up? Why?
George of the Jungle 2 stars Christopher Showerman as George (of the
Jungle) and Julie Benz as his bride, Ursula, replacing Brendan Fraser
and Leslie Mann respectively from the first film. We join George and
Ursula five years after the events of the first film - and they now
have a child, appropriately named George Jr., played by Disney
regular, Angus T. Jones, who remarkably has a pretty insignificant
role in the film. Anyways, George and Ursula are having relationship
problems - Ursula wants George to spend more time at home and the
jungle animals want George to spend more time with them, fulfilling
his role as "King of the Jungle". George is having
scheduling difficulties and is torn as to what he is supposed to do.
Naturally, this is the best time for George's meddling mother-in-law
to show up trying to convince Ursula to come home. Good for George
that Ursula loves him - bad though that her scheming ex-boyfriend Lyle
(Thomas Haden Church) is behind the scenes trying to steal Ursula
back! what happens, you ask? Well, you'll have to check it out for
yourself...
George 2 was actually pretty fun - if you don't take it too seriously
and ignore the second-rate special effects. I liked how the movie
poked fun of the fact that Brendan Fraser didn't return for the
sequel. Too bad they didn't make fun of Leslie Mann not returning -
but that would probably just be mean seeing as though her career
hasn't really gone anywhere. But my favorite would have to be Thomas
Haden Church. This guy cracks me up and it's beyond me why he doesn't
get better roles. And, of course, you can't forget the narrator, who
played an integral and comical part in the movie. Heck, if it weren't
for the narrator, this movie might have been only 20 minutes long!
This DVD was a bit short in the Special Features, although the
making-of featurette (title "Behind the Trees") is probably
one of the more entertaining ones I've ever seen. In it, the
featurette narrator battles with the film's narrator and end up
getting kicked off the set by security. Original, funny and worth
watching. Also included we get a "Vine Surfing" trivia game,
some deleted scenes with commentary and some not very funny bloopers,
or jungle-bungles. Surprisingly, although the deleted scenes had a
commentary, the film did not. Maybe there wasn't that much to say.
Also, surprisingly, there wasn't a video of the George of the Jungle
theme featuring Disney's young stars?! I'll give bonus points for
that!
Overall, George 2 was okay. Sure, it looked like a direct-to-video
release, but it was still relatively fun family entertainment. Just
don't expect anything more and you may not be disappointed.
