A box office success, mostly due to the
charm of Reese Witherspoon, Sweet Home Alabama is a formula romantic
comedy in which Witherspoon's character is proposed to by the son the
the mayor of New York City. But before she can accept, Witherspoon
must return to her hick town in Alabama and get a divorce from her
husband that she had essentially left seven years before in seek of
her career. As in the predictability of romantic comedies, old
feelings resurface and she begins to have doubts about who she loves.
Through its predictability, the movie does work well, primarily as a
result of likeable performances from Witherspoon right down to the
stereotyped town hick. The DVD quality is as good as can be expected.
Crisp picture and clear sound are obvious. But then again, it is not
necessarily a movie that you're paying attention to audio and visual
quality.
The disc's special features offer deleted scenes and an alternate
ending. The deleted scenes are actually interesting, compared to most
DVDs with deleted scenes. They show an entire subplot with another
character that was cut from the film. A wise choice I think, because
the deleted character would have made the ending of the movie even
more obvious. The alternate ending is rather bizarre and worth
watching just to make you wonder what the heck possessed the writer to
even put it from pen to paper. The special features are rounded out
with a SHeDAISY music video.
