This six disc box set of NYPD Blue contains every episode from the first season of the television show, which had its debut in 1993.

Odds are if you decide to purchase this box set, then you're either rich and bored, or a fan of the show and wouldn't listen to any negative criticism. That aside, the episodes have that grainy effect to it, giving the gritty feeling of the NYPD that I'm sure creator Steven Bochco was out to accomplish. It's a little hard to notice any superiority in sound, but the sound quality of the DVD is a little sharper than watching it on cable or dish.

The special features offer only what a die-hard fan may find interesting. The one-hour "Making of Season One" is considerably dry, and listening to Bochco may be a new cure for insomniacs. If you like romance between the characters, then there is a featurette "Love on NYPD Blue" that may be of interest to you. The "Cast Blotter" segment is almost annoying in the sense that NYPD has launched a few actors to stardom, such as David Schwimmer, Amy Brenneman and that old model chick on TV's "Just Shoot Me". Not quite sure if these are A-list stars though. A few other bonuses are offered which include commentaries on certain episodes and comparisons of the alterations from script to screen.

In all, the special features are a little bland, unless you're a die-hard fan. The audio/video quality is average and the episodes still have that initial pretentious theme of a show purposely trying to break the moral barriers of TV, which it did successfully ten years ago.

The Episodes: 8/10
The Extras: 3/10
