Slice of life drama starring three
generations of the Douglas family; Kirk, son Michael, and his son,
Cameron. The movie plays more like a vehicle to showcase the Douglas'
rather than a movie with a point or morality tale. After about a half
hour, I found myself wondering what the plot was, waiting for
something to unfold. But alas, nothing ever truly does. The film is
simply about a family and how they deal with death, estranged
relationships and a loser grandson. Performances are good, but some
are contrived along with certain dialogue.
Often movies with unappealing characters leave you with no interest in
them. It Runs in the Family has those characters. From a grumpy,
stubborn grandfather, to a husband who wants to cheat on his wife, to
a drug-dealing, loud mouth son, there is little to generate sympathy,
leaving the movie flat. The steady pace of the film never really picks
up either, creating a void where a climax would be. Unless you're a
serious fan of the Douglas family, you may find this movie a little
slow and pointless.
Special features are run-of-the-mill. The deleted scenes were
rightfully deleted. The featurette is about as entertaining as the
movie. However, there is a short feature on the career of Kirk Douglas
and his impact on cinema. Again, if you're a Douglas fan, you might
find this interesting.
