In time to help promote Van Helsing's release in theatres, Universal has packaged the original horror films of Frankenstein, Dracula, and The Wolfman in their own double disc sets.

Frankenstein contains the original 1931 film, the sequel; Bride of Frankenstein, and three other films; Son of Frankenstein, Ghost of Frankenstein, and House of Frankenstein. The first two are the classics. Therefore, one would watch them with appreciation because of the predisposed label of being classics, and that it is one of the original films of the horror genre. The other three films - well you'd have to be a real fan to really appreciate them. They would compare to the Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th sequels.

If you're interested in the history of the films and Mary Shelley's story, you may find the bonus features fascinating. Even though the audio commentaries sound like they are reading from a textbook, they present very interesting anecdotes on the films and the classic story. Sometimes I listen to the audio commentaries while I'm doing something else, but these ones kept my interest entirely. The featurettes are also engaging. In fact, the only weak spot on the special features is the five-minute featurette with Van Helsing director, Stephen Sommers.

If you're a fan of the classic horror films, this Frankenstein DVD is a must to own. It is one of the best collections I have seen.

The Movie:  9/10
The Extras:  10/10
