Frankie Muniz is the title character in
this James Bond style action movie for kids. Banks is a young teenager
who has been secretly trained at a CIA camp to become an agent one
day, if the need should arise. Well, it does, and Banks is called into
action. It seems the bad guy has hired a scientist who has created
destructive nanotechnology and Banks is sent in to gather information
about the scientist via his young teenage daughter to relay back to
the CIA. As with formula movies, Banks is nervous around the girl as
he develops a crush on her, but still manages to save the day and the
girl by the end of the movie.
This movie perplexed me. Its plot was so laughably run-of-the-mill
that I was wondering how it could be a box office success. Kids these
days are exposed to basically every movie from general rating to R
rating, and just about every one of them would prefer to watch a movie
with an R rating. One would assume that Cody Banks is a little too
childish of a movie to keep a young teenager's interest.
Then I watched the latest Bond movie, Die Another Day, and realized
how silly a movie that is. Cody Banks is modeled after the Bond genre
so apparently the silliness is a required element to entertain
audiences who have particular interests in these types of spy-action
movies. Perhaps Cody Banks is too childish for a young teenager (as
most young teenagers enjoy watching movies with a little more graphic
violence), but kids under ten may enjoy it a little more.
As for special features on the DVD, I can't really say because the
edition I reviewed either didn't have them, or for some bizarre
reason, I couldn't find the icon to access them. However, like you, I
saw commercials on TV showing highlights of the special features, and
they looked fairly entertaining. I'm sure it shows much of the
behind-the-scenes with the ever-charismatic Frankie Muniz.
If you are a fan of Bond films and want your kids to also be a fan,
then by all means, start them off with Agent Cody Banks. It can't
hurt!
