Jason Lee and Julie Stiles star in this
formula romantic comedy about a groom who ends up falling for another
woman one week before he is to walk down the aisle. To make matters
worse, the girl he has fallen for turns out to be his fiancé's
cousin. Comedic high jinx ensues for Jason Lee.
Painfully predictable, A Guy Thing makes sure that it throws in just
about every stereotyped character you can imagine; from the parents
who are completely opposite right down to the over-the-top immigrant
tuxedo tailor. Even before the opening credits are done, the ending
has pretty much been given away. The lust the brother has for the
bride makes that fairly clear. This movie does create one question:
What are Jason Lee and Julia Stiles doing in a movie like this?
DVD quality is average. There's nothing in the movie that would make
it more notable to watch it on DVD rather than VHS. The special
features offered are more entertaining than the movie, which still
isn't saying much. The deleted scenes are lame, the bloopers are
amusing, even though they are about eleven minutes long. There are a
couple of featurettes that are quite boring. There is an amusing
interactive quiz about relationships. I'm not sure how the quiz was
created, or if there is any solid psychological grounding behind it,
but it is a little amusing. You might want to do it alone in case your
score isn't what your partner would like it to be. There is a trivia
track that you can have on while watching the movie. Even though it's
a Cliff Claven lesson, the trivia is quite humorous at times,
particularly the lengthy and descriptive segment on crabs, or pubic
lice if you will. The audio commentary is an entertaining one, mainly
because it has Lee, Stiles, Selma Blair, Thomas Lennon and director
Chris Koch, who are all lively and chirp at each other throughout the
commentary.
Overall, the movie is not anything special and is below par on formula
romantic comedies, but the special features offer some redemption if
you rent or buy this DVD.
