The Guru is the delightful story of an
Indian dance instructor named Ramu Gupta (Jimi Mistry) who leaves his
native India to go to the land of the free and the home and the brave
to become a star. He ends up mistakenly auditioning for an adult flick
and befriending one of its star actresses (Heather Graham) and is soon
using her sexual wisdom and passing himself off as a sex guru to many,
including a New York socialite (Marisa Tomei) and all her rich friends
who have nothing better to do than spend on their money on a sex guru.
I must say, I was really surprised at how much I enjoyed The Guru. I
was expecting it to be okay, and although it is not knee-slapping
funny, it makes you smile, it is fun, it has a few really good dance
sequences (that Indian song was really starting to grow on me) and it
has enough likeable characters to make it well worth the 95 minute
viewing time. And it didn't hurt that both Graham and Tomei have some
wonderful underwear scenes.
The musical bits come through quite clearly on the DVD and it also
does a great job of showcasing the vast array of colors that are
featured in the movie.
Some of the extras featured on the DVD include the theatrical trailers
for The Life of David Gale and God help us, Bring It On Again (the God
help us was not in the title, I added that), the theatrical trailer
and the teaser for The Guru, six deleted scenes (a couple of them were
actually pretty funny) and a photo gallery.
There are also two feature commentaries. In the first commentary we
can hear director Daisy von Scherler Mayer and writer Tracey Jackson
talk about the various intricacies of making their movie. They talk
about how fun it was to work with all the different actors and
actresses, they talk about the lighting, the sound, filming in New
York, getting a New York feel in the movie (ie. timing a shot so the
subway would be in the background) and so on and so forth. It is an
informative commentary and fairly entertaining.
Next up, on a separate commentary, is the star of the movie, Jimi
Mistry. His commentary is much more subdued. He talks about being in
India for the first time in his life during the filming of this movie,
how hot it was in India, about the various scenes where he was tired
because his wife was having a baby (his first), about how great
Heather Graham and Marisa Tomei were, about wearing a sock on his
penis (the bastard got to stand in front of Heather Graham with only a
sock on his penis!), about the difficulty of filming on the busy
streets of New York and blah blah blah. His commentary is a bit
quieter, has longer moments of silence but overall is okay. The only
problem I had with the commentaries is that I had to watch the damn
movie three times. Mind you, I did enjoy the movie, but by the third
viewing it was starting to feel like I was actually doing real work
more than anything. There should never, ever be two separate
commentaries on a DVD. Ever!
Nevertheless, I have to say The Guru was an overall enjoyable
experience. It is a light romantic musical comedy, so the guys can get
away with watching this one with the girlfriend, enjoy a couple of
catchy tunes, shed a fake tear or two and still get an eyeful with
Heather and Marisa. This DVD is a good addition to anyone's
collection.
