Charlie's Angels was one of the great, progressive television shows from the 1970's. Three scantily-clad women with guns in the 70's was probably received by the general public as boderline pornographic. But it proved that two sexy women and one other women could handle guns, solve murders and fight crime as good as any macho 70's man with a leather jacket, bell-bottom pants and a really bad moustache. What do you mean by two sexy women and one other women, you may ask? Well, as a young child, I was just developing hormones when Charlie's Angels was on television. I can remember thinking Jaclyn Smith was the hottest women alive at that time. She was beautiful, sophisticated and my favourite Angel. Farrah Fawcett, I can't remember what I thought of her but I know I saw her spread in Playboy a few years back and think she has an excellent set of boobies and this show simply reaffirms that theory. For some reason, I don't think I really liked blondes as a young child. I did have the fortune of meeting her in person not too long ago and she was simply stunning. Kate Jackson, I could have lived without (although looking at her now, maybe, as a six-year old, I should not have been so picky).

Nevertheless, the show worked, was extremely successful, and the 1976-77 season is now available on DVD for anyone interested in re-living the seventies or watching Jaclyn Smith handle a gun or Farrah Fawcett not wearing a bra. Each episode involves the three Angels, Jill, Sabrina and Kelly, and the comedic John Bosley (David Doyle), who all work together for an investigative agency owned by the mysterious millionaire, Charlie Townsend.

The six-pack DVD collection features the 22 episodes from the original season, each just short of an hour long, as well as a short featurette, called Angels Forever, narrated by Charlie's Angels superfans (never knew they even existed!) and one execuive producer. The fans talk about their obsessions with Charlie's Angels, the producer talks about the various actresses who were used to replace Farrah Fawcett after season one, none of whom seemed to work terribly well. He also mentions how the show never really seemed to move forward. They used the same formula in season five as they did in season one and that is why, he feels, the show came to an end after five short seasons. There is also a printed insert that summarizes each episode. Sadly, we do not hear anything from any of the original Angels or Bosley for that matter. That would have been a great extra but apparently none of the women want anything to do with the Charlie's Angels series anymore. But when you think about it, do they really have anything else to talk about?!?!

Considering some of the absolute silliness that is now on television, Charlie's Angels really is a joy to watch. Although some of the story-lines, action sequences, characters and dialogue are almost comical by today's standards, by no means do I have a problem recommending this DVD. The shows look good, considering they were filmed almost 30 years ago, the picture is clear and they also sound great. The extras are disappointing but watching 22 hours of 70's TV more than makes up for any shortcomings. Cameron Diaz, Lucy Liu and Drew Barrymore should thank their lucky stars because without Farrah, Jaclyn and Kate, there would be no $100 million movie for any of these three women. Okay, I guess Drew made E.T., so I am wrong there. And Cameron made There's Something About Mary, so I'm wrong again. But I'm right about Lucy! I would put any of the original Angels up against our modern-day Angels anyday. I'd say Farrah is better than Cameron. Jaclyn is better than Lucy. And Drew and Kate are even. But that is just my opinion. I'm sure if any one of those six women were in front of me I'd drop my pants quicker than a speeding bullet. And then I would probably get arrested by one of Charlie's Angels.

The Movie: 7/10
The Extras: 4/10
