In Anger Management, Adam Sandler plays
Dave Buznik, a mild-mannered businessman whose life is turned upside
down when he is wrongfully accused of assaulting a flight attendant,
hitting a bar waitress and beating up a old blind man. Buznik is ordered
by the courts to attend the anger management classes of Dr. Buddy Rydell
(Jack Nicholson). But when Dr. B's unorthodox treatment involves him
moving in with David, all hell breaks loose. What ensues is a movie
filled with Nicholson's wackiness, Sandler's screaming and a few good
laughs.
Anger Management features a number of Hollywood's outstanding actors and
actresses. John Turturro plays a raging army veteran who fought in the
memorable battle of Grenada; Luis Guzman is a raging homosexual who
attends Dr. B's anger classes; Marisa Tomei plays Linda, David's
dedicated and tolerant girlfriend. There are also appearances by Heather
Graham, Woody Harrelson, Kevin Nealon and John C. Reilly, as well as
cameos by John McEnroe, Roger Clemens, Derek Jeter, Bobby Knight and
Rudy Giuliani.
For a movie that features a bevy of Hollywood talent as well as two of
Hollywood's legitimate A-list heavyweight actors, Anger Management is a
slight letdown as a movie. The laughs are few and far between and the
movie seems to suffer from a weak script, a number of scenes that might
be funny on paper but in reality might only garner a mild chuckle, a
not-so-funny Sandler and, at times, a too over-the-top Nicholson.
The DVD for Anger Management features a wide array of goodies for
everyone. First and foremost, there is a feature-length commentary by
Adam Sandler and director Peter Segal. For the most part, Sandler jokes
around, talks about how great Nicholson is and comments a bit too much
on some of the other actors penises (once, I could live with - but he
seems enamored with everyone's penis!) while Segal seems to giggle and
enjoy Sandler's company and everyone once in a while gives insightful
comments on the different challenges they faced while filming the movie,
some of the locations and different special effects that were put into
use. The commentary is relatively entertaining and makes Sandler seem
like a fairly humble, down-to-earth sort of guy.
Besides the commentary, there is a multiple choice game called "Do
You Have Anger Problems?" which is filled with silly questions
based on what you have seen from the movie, with questions and answers
being supplied by various people associated with the movie.
There are two featurettes, one called "Skull Session", which
is a brief documentary on the making of the film and has interviews with
some of the movie's primary cast except for Nicholson. The second
featurette is called "My Buddy Jack" which is basically a four
minute session of Sandler and a few others kissing Nicholson's ass.
The DVD also has four deleted scenes and a Bloopers Reel that will
generate a few good laughs (the Heather Graham bloopers were a hoot).
And for those of you interested, there are two "Easter Eggs" -
one in the audio setup section above the word "English" (the
cat's eyes will light up) and the other in the deleted scenes section
above the words "Candy Store" (the button on one of the
electric shavers will highlight).
As per usual, there are a number of trailers on the DVD - Anger
Management, Eight Crazy Nights, As Good As It Gets, Daddy Day Care,
S.W.A.T., Hollywood Homicide, Mona Lisa Smile, Mr. Deeds, Radio and
Peter Pan.
Overall, I would say that Anger Management as a movie, is a slight
disappointment. Probably not as funny a movie as you would think such a
movie should be. With that being said, it is a movie that deserves at
least one viewing and it is a DVD that is filled with enough extras to
keep you busy for at least a day or two. There are some good behind the
scenes moments and a fun commentary, with plenty of penis references. It
was disappointing that Nicholson had nothing to say in any of the
commentaries or interviews (much like the DVD for About Schmidt) but
Sandler and the rest of the cast do a good enough job to keep things
interesting.
