Jimmy Neutron is, as the title suggests, a Boy Genius. He is an inventor of strange and wonderful gadgets that often impress his dad and, equally as often, annoy his mother. Jimmy is bent on contacting an alien life form so naturally he does what any other boy genius would do - he builds his own rocket and communication satellite to make contact.

Now wait - don't dismiss this film as fluff so fast. Not only is it an enjoyable flick for the kids, but it also works well for adults. For me, that's the sign of a good children's movie - how well it can relate to both parents and kids. Jimmy Neutron manages to do both.

The funny campfire scene where the ghost story is a retelling of the Blair Witch Project, was funny to parents, even though the kids didn't understand it. They had a great time with the animation, which was very well done and the detail was great. The burping scene had the kids laughing pretty hard, and gave me a chuckle as well.

The alien race he contacts turns out to be an evil race and captures all the parents in town. At first the kids love that their parents aren't there, but they soon realize that they do need them. This sort of sums up the morality of this movie - parents may be annoying at times, but we really do need them.

The movie was voiced very nicely by the likes of Patrick Stewart and Martin Short, as well as many others.

All around the movie was rather fun, good family fare.

The Special Features

The disk offers two options for viewing - full frame and widescreen. Also included was an enhancement for 16:9 TVs. One nice option was that the scene selection menu offered viewing in either wide or full screen. While it became a little repetitious at times, it still was a nice feature. The movie also contains the 5.1 Dolby Digital and 2 channel English and French track.

My kids favorite bonus materials are games and music videos. That's why Shrek was such a big hit with my kids. However since we don't have DVD ROM on our computer the kids couldn't play the games. However they loved the music videos. Their favorite was "The Kids in America", an old song given a little update by teens for the movie. They are singing right along and loving it.

The disc also has some Nickelodeon teaser material, which was shown on TV leading up to the movie release. This was a pretty good background source for the start of the movie. It also has the trailers, and some other promo spots that aren't related to the movie, but do give more on the kids interactions and their relationships.

Easy to navigate, my kids were able to handle it as well. While I was a little disappointed with the static scene selections the DVD, it was still very user friendly.

Good Movie + Fun DVD = A winning combination every time.

The Movie: 7.5/10
The Extras: 7.5/10

Recommendation: One For The Kid's Library
