The general rule is that if a movie is successful, its sequel will out-earn the original. Not always true - but mostly. However, from what I've seen, the general rule for movies based on an original TV series is the exact opposite. The Flintstones. Charlie's Angels. The first movie is a novelty - so people go out of curiosity. After that, the novelty is gone. So - why bother going to the sequel - and more importantly - why bother making a sequel? It's just statistics. That's why movies like Inspector Gadget 2 and George of the Jungle 2 go straight to video. All that being said, I didn't really mind Scooby-Doo 2.
In Scooby-Doo 2, the Scooby gang are invited to the grand opening of a new museum exhibit in their honor which showcases some of the greatest villains the gang has ever matched wits with. Everything is great and they're the smash of the party until - zoinks - the Pterodactyl Ghost comes to life! Soon, ghosts begin to terrorize Coolsville and it's up to Mystery Inc. to come to the rescue.
So I was entertained. Gimme a break. It should also be noted that I didn't see the original - so this one was my novelty. Sure, the potty humor was a bit much (do we really have to appeal to the lowest common denominator), and the CG left a lot to be desired (from what I've been told, it was better in the first movie) but if you can sit back and not take it all too seriously, is it really all that bad?
Special features on this DVD release include seven deleted scenes with optional commentary - nothing special here, but worth a look if you're curious. Next, a "Triple Threat" Featurette where Scooby takes us on a behind-the-scenes tour of the Scooby-Doo 2 set with interviews with the cast and crew. Having Scooby give the tour is a bit odd - and one question - what's with that voice? Next, a "True Ghoul Hollywood Story" which is a 'Behind-the-Music' type featurette looking at the villains from the movie, what they were like as kids and such. A novelty feature. Our final featurette, "Dancing Dog" looks at how the filmmakers made Scooby dance and teaches us a few of his moves. More features include a couple of Scooby-games ("The Scooby-Doo Monsters Unleashed Challenge" and "The Mystery of the Missing Pants"), both of which I couldn't really figure out, a couple of music videos and some trailers for some upcoming WB theatrical and home video releases. DVD-ROM features include the option of downloading the "Scooby Dancer" which is desktop application that allows you to have a dancing Scooby pop up from time to time.
At heart, this movie was made strictly for the kids. If you're an adult looking to relive the old times with the Scooby cartoons and a few old Scooby villains this one might not be for you. But if you can go into this movie with little to no expectations you just might have fun with it.
