There are animated movies like Finding Nemo or Shrek, and then there are animated movies like Clifford's Really Big Movie. And the big difference is the class. I don't know if class is really the right word. A movie like Finding Nemo or Shrek you really have to wonder. They slip in so many adult references you really don't know what jokes the kids are getting or not. For the most part, I try to avoid these movies. But you can't go wrong with Clifford. Maybe the word isn't class - maybe it's wholesome. Either way, I prefer Clifford.

In Clifford's Really Big Movie, in a nutshell, Clifford (voiced by the late, great John Ritter) leaves home to participate in a talent contest to win a lifetime supply of Tummy Yummies dog food. As the movie begins, Clifford and his friends T-Bone and Cleo go to the fair. While there, they have the chance to see an act performed by some travelling animals. Unfortunately, the act isn't doing so well and they are on the brink of being let go by the circus owner. Their only hope is an upcoming talent contest where the winner gets fame, fortune and a lifetime supply of dog food. They need something BIG - and along comes Clifford. Clifford is reluctant to leave home, but when he overhears his owners talking about how expensive it is to feed him, he heads out on the road with his new (and old) pals. Clifford hits it big, but soon, the show's old star is feeling squeezed out of the picture. But, this wouldn't be a very good family movie if we didn't learn a few lessons - like sharing - even if it's sharing the spotlight.

I really liked this movie - and so did my kids. And that's saying something. Running just over an hour (74 minutes) it's a bit longish by Clifford standards, but the action moves along. Overall, the story is fun and the characters are likeable, which is all you can really ask for.

Special features on this DVD include a behind-the-scenes featurette titled "Inside the Dog House" featuring interviews with some of the cast and crew responsible for the movie, two read-along activities featuring storylines from the movie, a music video (with sing-along), some arts and crafts activities titled Cleo's Crafts and finally the movie's theatrical trailer. Overall, some great additions for the kids. Nothing too fancy, but just the right amount to keep them happy.

I couldn't be more satisfied with the quality of Clifford's Really Big Movie. As a parent who closely monitors what my kids are watching, I'm glad to add this to their collection - and to be able to sit down and watch it with them. It's entertainment for the whole family.
