First off, when one of the stars of your movie is Tom Arnold, you know you are in trouble. I don't care who or what else you put in your movie, any movie with Tom Arnold already has a lot going against it. And, when the actual star of your movie (in this case Kevin Hart) takes the back seat on the DVD Cover (or movie poster), you gotta wonder. Granted - I understand that's just marketing and if the movie poster featured Hart front and center with Snoop Dogg in the background, nobody would have bothered. Still. I guess what I'm trying to say is that this movie had me raising my eyebrow from the get go.
In Soul Plane Hart plays Nashan Wade, a man who wins millions in a preposterous lawsuit against an airline. He uses his millions to start Nashan Wade Airlines (or NWA for short). NWA is a full service airline - complete with casinos, strip joints, dance clubs and whatever else you could imagine - with Captain Mack (Snoop Dogg) who is afraid of heights, Nashan's idiot brother Muggsy (Method Man) who is out to make every dollar he can, and the flight's only white passenger - Mr. Hunkee (Tom Arnold) who is going through a bit of a family crisis. . The movie pretty much spans the inaugural NWA flight with some decent music and a few laughs thrown in for the trip.
There are two editions of this DVD available - the original theatrical edition and the Mile-High edition with scenes not seen in theaters. (I never saw the standard edition, so I can't really tell you about the differences - but the cover promises "five extra minutes of racy hilarious footage".)
The Mile-High edition includes a number of special features. They include two behind-the-scenes featurette titled "Boarding Pass: The Making of Soul Plane" and "The Upgrade" which looks at the film's director, Jessy Terrero (I have no idea why they called it "The Upgrade"?). Also, we get a laughter-filled feature-length commentary from the diretor and cast members Kevin Hart, Tom Arnold, Gary Anthony Williams and Godfrey. More features include 4 deleted scenes without commentary (If this is the Mile-High edition, why aren't these scenes included?), some outtakes, a photo gallery, the full-length version of the film's Survivor Safety Video, and trailers for this movie, a Def Jam video game and some other MGM releases.
Not really expecting a lot, Soul Plane didn't really deliver a lot. It wasn't as bad as I was thought it might be, but it was nothing near what I could recommend. I guess the kids might get a laugh - after all - they're the ones this movie was made for.
