Coyote Ugly is one of those movies I've seen a hundred times on the movie shelf and have considered renting, but could never bring myself to do it. There was always the thought that there was something better out there - something more worth my time. So, when I received this double-dip "Unrated Extended Cut" DVD there were no more excuses. And what did I think? Well, the movie just confirmed my suspicions.

The movie stars Piper Perabo as Violet Sanford, a small-town Jersey girl who moves to NYC to pursue her dreams of being a songwriter. To pay the rent, she takes a job at a bar called Coyote Ugly. There, she joins a group of sexy bartenders who pour drinks, dance dirty and do everything short of taking their clothes off to please the patrons - and make a few dollars. Along the way, she meets a hot guy with and accent, becomes the disappointment of her father's life, achieves her life's ambition of becoming a songwriter and learns a thing or two about herself. Pretty standard stuff.

Having not seen the "regular" version of this movie, I can't really say what makes this one a "Unrated Extended Cut" but if I had to guess, it'd be the hot, steamy (and nude) sex scene featuring Piper and her Aussie hottie. Nice pipes, Piper.

Bonus features on this DVD include a commentary with director David McNally, producer Jerry Bruckheimer and the Coyotes themseleves who dominate the conversation, including Tyra Banks, Maria Bello, Izabella Miko, Bridget Moynahan and Piper Perabo.

Besides the commentary, there are a number of featurettes. First, there's "Search for the Stars" which looks at casting the leading roles in the movie. Next, "Inside the Songs" looks at the role of the music in the development of Piper's character. In "Coyote 101" we see how the girls trained to be Coyotes including looks at the dancing choreography and learning how to pour drinks. More features include five additional scenes (without commentary), an "Action Overload" sequence which shows off some of the movie's highlights, a LeAnn Rimes Music Video and the film's theatrical trailer. There are also previews for some other recent Buena Vista DVD titles.

If I can say anything about this DVD it's that I'm glad to have finally watched it. Now, I can safely go to the video store and not have to worry about seeing this movie and wanting to rent it. Although it's pretty formulaic, its still appealing for the guys wanting to check out the Coyotes and for the girls for its messages of girl power and following your dreams.
