When I review a DVD, I try to be objective. Sure, a movie like "Sleepover" isn't made for a guy like me, but the least I can do is can try to check it out from the perspective of the audience it is made for. Now, I can't really say that I have the ability to get into the mind of a pre-teen/teenage girl, but if I could, I wouldn't think this movie could really be that bad. Of course, the movie tanked at the box office, so I guess I could always be wrong.

Sleepover is the story of Julie (Alexa Vega). She's in a predicament. She's heading to high school and her best friend Hannah (Mika Boorem) is moving to Vancouver, leaving her behind to tread the murky waters of higher education by herself. She's not really a nerd, but she's not really cool either - which means come high school she won't be getting a seat at the fountain where all the "cool" kids sit - and more importantly her crush Steve (Sean Faris) won't even know she exists.

So, last night of Junior High, Julie and her friends Hannah, Farrah (Scout Taylor-Compton) and Yancy (Kallie Flynn Childress) are having a sleepover. At the same time, the "cool" girls are having their own sleepover. So for kicks, they challenge Julie and her friends to a scavenger hunt - the prize - a seat at the fountain. So they sneak out of their house, steal a car, sneak into a nightclub, break into a house and sneak into a high school dance. All the kinds of things you'd want your 14-year old to do. And, of course, along the way she wins the contest and gets the guy.

Like the movie, the "Sleepover" DVD enough special features to satisfy its core audience. First, an audio commentary with director Joe Nussbaum and much of the principle cast including Alexa Vega and Mika Boorem. There's not a lot of technical details here - instead they focus on all the fun they had making the movie (ie. lots of giggles). Next, a few of featurettes. The first is a "making-of" titled "A Guide to the Perfect Sleepover". Again, not a lot of material here, but it may be some fun for the kids. The others ("Meet the Girls", "Ready, Set, Action!" and "Sleepover Confessions") pretty much give a lot of the same - all fluff, no substance, fun for kids. There's also a gag reel with some behind-the-scenes antics and the movie's original theatrical trailer.

Really, it wasn't such a bad movie, if you're a young girl. It gives a lot of bad messages (ie. if you're considered cool and you've got the guy of your dreams then life is great!) and it's rated PG for "Teen Dating" (is that really a reason to rate a movie?!) but there's some fun to be had - and really, what else can you expect?
