I've said it about him before and I'll say it again. The Rock has charisma. And he's proven it yet again with his starring role in Walking Tall, the remake of the 1973 'classic', itself loosely based on a true story.
It's the story of Chris Vaughn (The Rock) a war veteran who returns to his hometown only to discover that home isn't home anymore. Instead, the ole' mill, the one where people, their fathers and their grandfathers broke their backs to earn enough money to put food on the table, has been shut down and the town's new enterprise is the corrupt casino, owned by one of Buford's former friends (Neal McDonough). Not only is the casino corrupt, but so is the sheriff's office. So, the solution is to become the new sheriff. With his new deputy and best friend (Johnny Knoxville) at his side, The Rock kicks ass and sets about cleaning up his hometown.
If you'd have asked me a couple of years ago if I'd enjoy a movie starring a professional wrestler and the guy from Jackass, I'd have laughed. Of course, since then, I've seen The Rundown and Jackass The Movie and have come to quite enjoy the antics of these two guys. So I guess it isn't such a stretch to imagine liking this movie.
Special features on the Walking Tall DVD include a couple of great commentaries. The first features The Rock and here, the guy again shows the importance of charisma. He owns you. If only Johnny Knoxville had participated as well. There were a few times where there were gaps that went on a little too long, and he comes off as a bit cocky and a little sexist, but it's all in good fun. Also for any Canadians out there, he gives Tim Hortons a pretty nice plug. The second commentary features director Kevin Bray, director of photography Glen MacPherson and editor Robert Ivison. Not as good as the first commentary, but still a nice listen with some good info mixed up with some good laughs. Nicely done. The DVDs only featurette is "Fight the Good Fight" which looks at creating the films fight/action sequences. Introduced by The Rock, this is short (just under nine minutes) but worth a look. More features include three deleted scenes plus an alternate ending, about 45 seconds worth of bloopers, a photo gallery and trailers for this and other MGM releases.
Overall, a nice DVD with much of the credit going to the film's stars, The Rock and Johnny Knoxville. The acting isn't award worthy - and the story isn't too great - but it's the charisma. Charisma goes a long way.
