'Back To The Future' on its way to DVD
Wednesday, September 5, 2001 12:37 PM EDT
The "Back To The Future" trilogy will belatedly make its way to DVD in the new year, but don't hold your breath for a fourth instalment in the series.
Co-screenwriter Bob Gale told the "Back To The Future" fan site bttf.com that Universal has been holding back the release of the movies on DVD because of a deal that assigned foreign rights for the studio's films to rival Columbia's video-distribution arm.
Gale told bttf.com that he believes that deal expires by the end of the year, which would clear the way for the movies to be released on DVD in deluxe editions.
"It's certainly our desire to do special editions, with commentary, trailers and anything else that makes sense to put on the discs ... there's EPK (electronic press kit) stuff, and maybe we can locate the B-roll on some of that," said Gale, who described himself and director Robert Zemeckis as big DVD fans.
"Bob and I also did on-camera interviews for BTTF about three or four years ago, so I'm sure the home-video department has that somewhere," Gale said. (He added that Zemeckis and star Kurt Russell recently recorded a narration track for a DVD version of another Zemeckis film, their 1980 collaboration "Used Cars," due for release in October.)
The site said screenwriter Ed Solomon ("Charlie's Angels," "Men In Black") has reportedly been hired to come up with a treatment for a fourth "Back To The Future" film, but Gale said he believes that won't likely happen.
"Years ago, Bob (Zemeckis) and I would kick it around, but we couldn't do it without Michael J. Fox, and Michael just isn't in any condition to do something like that," Gale told bttf.com.
"I can't believe the fans would want to see a Part 4 without Michael in it either - as a fan, I certainly wouldn't. It would smell too cheap. There will not be a Part 4."
