'Titanic' Star Winslet Splits From Husband
Tuesday, September 4, 2001 9:13 PM EDT
British actress Kate Winslet, star of the blockbuster movie "Titanic", has separated from her film director husband Jim Threapleton after less than three years of marriage.
"No other parties are involved in this amicable and respectful separation. Their daughter Mia will remain the first priority for both of them," Winslet's spokesman, Robert Garlock, said in a statement released late on Monday.
The announcement will come as a shock to many who perceived Winslet's marriage to Threapleton as the picture of domestic bliss.
In an interview in the September issue of "InStyle" magazine, Winslet spoke affectionately about her husband but hinted that her personal life was not all plain sailing.
"Having a baby has strengthened the relationship, although there are highs and lows and at times it's tough. I know we're very lucky," she said.
Winslet was catapulted to international stardom by her role as Rose in "Titanic", one of the most successful movies ever, but she has largely turned her back on Hollywood blockbusters to appear in a clutch of smaller films.
It was on the set of one of these films ("Hideous Kinky") that the twice Oscar-nominated actress met assistant film director Threapleton in 1997. They were engaged within months.
The couple married in a low-key ceremony in her local church in Reading, southern England, in 1998.
"When you know (you are in love), you know - that's what I've been told all my life and now I know," Winslet said at the time.
Winslet often spoke of her determination to put her domestic happiness ahead of her career. Last year the couple bought an $1.17 million rural home in southern England in which to raise their baby daughter. The curvaceous actress, often lauded for her outspoken determination not to give in to pressure to slim down, hit headlines last month after revealing she had shed about 56 pounds after consulting a "facial analyst" who examined her face for signs of nutritional deficiency.
Winslet will next be seen in the World War Two spy thriller "Enigma".
