A First Look at 'Harry Potter'?
Thursday, July 12, 2001 3:29 PM EDT

Despite two trailers and a minefield of hype, "Harry Potter And The Sorcerer's Stone" has managed to keep itself under fairly tight wraps - until now.

Aint-It-Cool-News has received an e-mail from a normally reliable source who says he has been working on some of the film's post-production.

The scooper claims to have seen a cut of the first "Harry Potter movie", and that it is going to do fans proud.

The source continues that the current edit stands at just over two hours long and believes it would be a mistake if Warner Bros. decided to chop it to a family-friendly 90 minutes. He says "someday the studio execs might learn that if a movie's good enough to hold a child's interest, it doesn't have to be abbreviated to MTV-style attention span".

More importantly the source says Chris Columbus has done a brilliant job as director. Many people were concerned that the man behind "Home Alone" and "Mrs Doubtfire" was not going to be able to bring J.K. Rowling's slightly edgy vision to the big screen, but says "he has blended everything that made the book so great".

He's also full of praise for newcomer Daniel Radcliffe, who plays the young wizard. The scooper believes the actor will "become synonymous with Harry Potter, just like Christopher Reeve was with Superman, Harrison Ford with Indiana Jones. To see any of the stills, Radcliffe certainly looks like Harry Potter come to life. But he also feels like Potter".

The scooper continues, praising the rest of the cast, which includes Robbie Coltrane, Maggie Smith, Richard Harris and Alan Rickman, along with the cinematography, which he calls "Ridley Scottian" in places.

However the distinct lack of any new information on the film will undoubtedly give rise to heated debates over whether this scoop is real or not, all the way until November 16th when 'Harry Potter' opens nationwide.
