Reynolds Joins "Longest Yard" Remake
Thursday, April 29, 2004 10:04 AM EDT
Burt Reynolds will star opposite Adam Sandler and Chris Rock in Paramount/Sony's remake of "The Longest Yard", set to start shooting in July. He'll portray the coach of the team of inmates forced to play football against a team of guards.
In the original "Longest Yard", released in 1974 by Paramount, Reynolds starred as retired pro football quarterback and prison inmate. Michael Conrad portrayed the coach of the inmates.
Reynolds was a star running back at Florida State University for two seasons but turned to acting after suffering a knee injury on a punt return in 1955.
Plans are to adhere to the basic storyline of the original. "The Longest Yard" was a solid hit when it was released in 1974, grossing $46 million.
Reynolds next will be seen as a backwoods hermit in Paramount's "Without a Paddle", a comedy that mildly spoofs another '70s Reynolds vehicle, "Deliverance". He recently wrapped "Forget About It", co-starring with Raquel Welch, Charles Durning and Robert Loggia, and he is due to star soon in "Cloud Nine" for Albert Ruddy.
