Emmerich/Devlin Teaming for "Anthem"
Thursday, April 29, 2004 10:00 AM EDT
Director Roland Emmerich ("The Day After Tomorrow") will delve into the political realm with "Anthem", a thriller about an impeached president who refuses to leave the White House.
Emmerich would produce with former business partner Dean Devlin. Together, the duo made such films as "Godzilla" and "Independence Day".
The plot line for "Anthem", as it currently stands, also involves an FBI agent who rushes to discover the truth behind a top-level conspiracy that threatens to undermine the Constitution.
Devlin and Emmerich are understood to have written the first draft. The project is currently out to new writers. Although Emmerich could direct the project, that decision has not yet been made.
Emmerich is preparing for the May 28 release of 20th Century Fox's "The Day After Tomorrow", in which a climatologist tries to save the world from global warming as New York is overwhelmed by a new Ice Age. Although Fox has positioned "Tomorrow" as a disaster picture and not a political polemic, it promises to become a focal point in the debate over global warming, with critics of the current administration's policies hoping that the movie will generate popular concern over the issue.
