Kingsley in Polanski's "Oliver Twist"

Roman Polanski's "Oliver Twist", the latest adaptation of Charles Dickens' 1838 classic, will begin a 16-week shoot in Prague on July 12 and is scheduled for a Christmas 2005 release.
Introducing Barney Clark -- a 10-year-old boy from Hackney, London, who has been cast in the leading role -- Polanski told a crowded news conference Monday that he has stuck closely to Dickens to make what is "essentially a children's film", which would be "quite different" from his Oscar-winning "The Pianist".
Ben Kingsley will play Fagin, the crooked but lovable old man who heads a pick-pocketing ring into which the young orphaned Oliver gets enticed. Jamie Foreman ("I'll Sleep When I'm Dead") will play the Artful Dodger and Frank Finlay ("The Pianist") has been cast as Mr. Brownlow, the benevolent gentleman who rescues Oliver from the streets.
According to co-producer Robert Benmussa, the sets are "far more elaborate" than those in Martin Scorsese's "Gangs of New York", with the overcrowded streets of 19th century London reconstructed on a 150-yard street, complete with cobbled streets and carriages.
