The Blind Side Review

In The Blind Side, Quinton Aaron stars as Michael Oher, a young man born and raised in Memphis, Tennessee to a crack addict mother and a father who disappeared soon after his birth. He grew up moving from school to school, at times homeless and extremely uneducated. At the age of 18, despite his dreadful situation, Oher was admitted into a private school when the coach of the football team took note of his 6′4″ 300 lb. frame. A couple with a daughter and son who attended the same school also became familiar with Oher and he was subsequently invited to stay one night at their lavish Memphis home. Somehow that night turned into legal adoptation (not right away but down the road). The Tuohy’s treated Michael like a son, giving him a bedroom, buying him clothes, encouraging his growth in football and connecting him with a tutor to help with his studies. The tutor helped — Oher was able to improve his grade point average from 0.9 to 2.52. Joining the football team helped too — Oher went on to play for the University of Mississippi and eventually became a first round pick of the NFL’s Baltimore Ravens. The boy who grew up uneducated, homeless and with no family is now the starting offensive right tackle for the Ravens. He has also recently signed a 5-year, $13.8 million dollar contract. Not too shabby if you ask me. Read more

2012 Review

2012 Review

In 2012, director Roland Emmerich once again warns us that the world is going to end, this time in the year 2012. That year is a bit too close for my liking. It seems radiation from the sun is causing the Earth’s core to heat up like never before and as a result, the planet’s crust shifts causing massive earthquakes, volcanic eruptions and gigantic tsunamis. The Earth and mankind will cease to exist once again, in the eyes of Mr. Emmerich. Unless, of course, you are a friend or family member of Jackson Curtis (John Cusack), the famous author and part-time limo driver in Los Angeles who will stop at nothing to save his ex-wife (Amanda Peet), her new husband (although he should have tried a little harder in this case) and his two kids, even if it means taking them to China and the Himalayan mountains. Sounds pretty simple. Read more

Disney’s A Christmas Carol Review

A Christmas Carol

It’s hard to believe that Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol 166 years ago, but here we are in 2009 and Robert Zemeckis has spent $180 million to produce a motion-capture animated film that retells the famous story. The movie opens this weekend on more than 2,000 digital 3D screens and features the voices of Jim Carrey, Gary Oldman, Colin Firth, Bob Hoskins, Cary Elwes and Robin Wright Penn. Despite first being published on December 19, 1843, A Christmas Carol remains one of the most popular, heart-warming holiday tales ever written. I’m sure you don’t need a recap of Scrooge’s encounters with the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present and Future. Read more

In The Box, Cameron Diaz stars as Norma and James Marsden is her husband Arthur. As the movie begins, we are told it is 1976, it is 5:44AM in Virginia and Norma and Arthur are sound asleep in their comfortable suburban home. A minute later the doorbell rings and Norma answers the door to find a box sitting on her step – THE box. In the box is another box with a glass case that has a red button inside of it. A key is needed to access the button. A note in the box indicates that Mr. Steward will be contacting them in 11 hours with more information. Read more

The Fourth Kind Movie Review

In The Fourth Kind, we are introduced to Dr. Abigail Tyler, a psychologist who worked in Nome, Alaska and had a number of patients who seemed to be traumatized by inexplicable events that happened to them in the middle of the night. Some of the patients claimed they had been disturbed by these events since childhood. Dr. Tyler began audio and videotaping her sessions with these patients in an effort to shed some light on what exactly was happening to the people of Nome. The Fourth Kind reenacts these events around the real footage of sessions with Dr. Tyler herself and some of her patients. There are also real audio and video recordings from police car cameras and police interrogation tapes that are vital to the story. Most of the footage that is integrated into the movie comes from incidents that happened in October of the year 2000 but there are also clips from an extensive interview between the film’s writer and director Olatunde Osunsanmi and Dr. Tyler from September 2002. The Men Who Stare at Goats Review

In The Men Who Stare At Goats, Ewan McGregor plays Bob Wilton, a lowly reporter from Ann Arbor, Michigan, who finds himself stationed in Kuwait, waiting to cross the border into Iraq to cover Operation Iraqi Freedom. With his personal life in shambles after his wife left him for a one-armed man, Wilton figures that he can head to Iraq, look like a hero with some Pulitzer Prize-winning journalism and win back the love of his life. Wilton has no idea, however, how his life is about to change when he meets up with a character named Lyn Cassady (George Clooney), who claims to be a recently re-activated member of the U.S. Army’s New Earth Battalion, a unit that trained its soldiers to use paranormal powers on their missions. The men are made to believe that they can split clouds, become invisible, pass through solid walls and kill with a simple look – a practice they test out on goats. Cassady takes Wilton through the history of the classified military program, where we are introduced to characters like Lieutenant Colonel Bill Django (Jeff Bridges), the off-the-wall founder of the program and the man in charge of training the soldiers and Larry Hooper (Kevin Spacey), a psychic soldier and Lyn’s former nemesis, who is now stationed in Iraq. As Wilton points out in the movie, he headed to Iraq looking for a story and Lyn Cassady brought him an adventure. Read more

Movie Review: Paranormal Activity

Paranormal Activity Movie Review

In Paranormal Activity, Micah and Katie are a couple who have recently moved into a house in San Diego, and a pretty nice house at that. Micah is a day trader who obviously excels at his practice. Katie is a student. Wierd things happen at their new house. Not alarmingly strange but things like keys moving from where they were last placed; lights flickering; water taps turning on for no reason; perhaps some noises, like footsteps or banging on the walls, at night. It’s disturbing enough for Micah and Katie that they buy a video camera to try to figure out what is happening in their home. Micah becomes obsessed with his new toy, carrying it around during the day to film the house and his girlfriend and setting it up in the bedroom at night to watch over the couple as they sleep and when most of the “activity” is happening. And it seems that whatever presence is haunting their home has become obsessed with the camera as well, because the paranormal activity increases and intensifies soon after the camera is purchased. It’s almost like the “presence” wants to play it up for the camera. Paranormal Activity takes some footage gathered by the couple and proceeds to tell us the terrifying story of the next 21 days in the lives of Micah Sloat and Katie Featherston. Read more

Law Abiding Citizen Review

In Law Abiding Citizen, Gerard Butler is Clyde Shelton, a loving husband and father who, early on in the movie, is forced to witness the brutal murder of his wife and daughter. The movie jumps ahead a few years where the murderers have been caught and are on trial. The Philadelphia Assistant District Attorney handling the case, Nick Rice (Jamie Foxx), feels that there is not enough evidence to convict both murderers so he strikes a deal with one of the men where he will testify against his less guilty partner. The accomplice is sentenced to the death penalty and the other killer is charged with third degree murder, whereby he will be eligible for parole in five years. This does not sit well with Clyde.
