2012 Tops Box Office

2012 was the top movie at the box office this weekend earning an estimated $65 million. The movie represents the best opening of star John Cusack’s career and the 2nd best opening of director Roland Emmerich’s career — after The Day After Tomorrow which opened in 2004 with $68.7 million.

Dropping to 2nd for the weekend was Disney’s A Christmas Carol with $22.3 million — a mere 25% drop since opening last weekend. Still — the movie still has a ways to go before recouping its reported $200 million budget.  After 2 weekends in release the movie, directed by Robert Zemeckis and featuring performances by Jim Carrey, has earned $63.3 million.

Hanging on in 3rd spot was The Men Who Stare at Goats. The movie, starring George Clooney and Ewan McGregor, earned another $6.2 million bringing its 2 week total to $23.3 million.

Entering the top ten in 4th place was Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire. The movie earned $6.1 million bringing its total to $8.9 million.

Rounding out the top 5 movies was Michael Jackson’s This Is It earning another $5.1 million. The movie has earned $68.2 million after 3 weekends in release.

Next weekend’s new releases include The Twilight Saga: New Moon with Kristen Stewart, Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner, The Blind Side with Sandra Bullock and the animated Planet 51.

Disney’s A Christmas Carol, directed by Robert Zemeckis and starring Jim Carrey, opened at the top of the box office this weekend earning an estimated $31 million. That’s a bit of a disappointment considering the movie cost a reported $200 million to produce. Then again, it’s early in the holiday season, so the movie may stick around for a while. Seemed a little early to me to be releasing a Christmas movie anyways. I’m still making my way through leftover Halloween candy. I don’t want to be thinking about Christmas for at least a couple of more weeks.

Dropping to 2nd place was Michael Jackson’s This Is It which earned $14 million in its 2nd weekend of release. The movie has earned $57.8 million to-date — with another $70 million at the international box office.

Opening in 3rd was The Men Who Stare at Goats. The movie, which stars George Clooney and Ewan McGregor, opened with $13.3 million.

Rounding out the top 5 movies were The Fourth Kind which opened with $12.5 million and Paranormal Activity which added another $8.6 million, bringing it’s 7-week total to $97.4 million.

In other new releases, The Box opened in 6th place with $7.8 million while Precious: Based on the Novel “Push” by Sapphire opened in 13th place with $1.8 million — at only 18 theaters. That’s an amazing $100,000 per location. (To put that in perspective, A Christmas Carol earned $8,400 per location.)

Next weekend’s new releases include 2012 starring John Cusack and directed by Roland Emmerich and Pirate Radio written and directed by Richard Curtis. Fantastic Mr. Fox also opens in limited release.

Paranormal Activity Tops Box Office

Paranormal Activity was the top movie at the box office this weekend, earning an estimated $22 million. The movie — produced on a reported budget of $15,000 — has earned $62.4 million after 5 weekends of release.

Opening in 2nd place was Saw VI. The movie earned an estimated $14.8 million — representing the lowest opening for a Saw movie since the original opened with $18.2 million in 2004. Incidentally, with a 44% rating at Rotten Tomatoes, Saw VI is the best reviewed movie of the franchise next to the original which scored 46% with RT critics. Go figure.

Falling to 3rd place for the weekend was Where the Wild Things Are which scored another $14.4 million — bringing it’s 2-week total to $53.9 million.

Rounding out the top 5 films were Law Abiding Citizen in 4th with $12.7 million ($40.3 million to-date) and Couples Retreat in 5th with $11 million ($78.2 million to-date).

Wild Things Roar at Box Office

Wild Things Tops Box Office

Where the Wild Things Are was the top movie at the box office this weekend earning an estimated $32.4 million. The movie, based on the children’s book by Maurice Sendak, stars Max Records as a boy named Max who is experiencing a bit of trouble at home and runs away where he finds himself in a world inhabited by the Wild Things. Spike Jonze directed. I saw the movie this weekend with daughter #2 and liked it. Although, for the most part, I found myself wondering throughout what my daughter was thinking. She got a little frightened at the end, and was genuinely sad when Max left the Wild Things. (I think that was the first time ever where a scene in a movie made her cry. Almost broke my heart.) Incidentally, I was a bit shocked with how well the movie did, considering I went to a Saturday matinee and the theater was only 10% full.

In 2nd place was Law Abiding Citizen starring Gerard Butler and Jamie Foxx. (I wanted to see this one too, but opted for Zombieland instead.) The movie opened with a respectable $21.2 million.

Continuing to rake in the dollars in 3rd place was Paranormal Activity. The movie expanded to 800 locations and earned another $20.1 million, bringing its 4-week total to $33.7 million. Not bad for a movie that cost a reported $15,000 to make. Based on those numbers, the movie is well on its way to beating out Blair Witch as the most profitable movie of all time.

Rounding out the top 5 films were Couples Retreat in 4th with $17.9 million ($63.3 million to-date) and The Stepfather which opened in 5th with $12.3 million.

Next weekend’s new releases include Saw VI, Astro Boy, Cirque du Freak: The Vampire’s Assistant and Amelia.

Opening in 3rd was Fame. The movie, a remake of the 1980 original, opened with $10 million.
