Dear John Tops Box Office

After seven strong weeks at the box office, Avatar was ousted from the top spot by Dear John starring Channing Tatum and Amanda Seyfried. The romantic drama, based on the book by Nicholas Sparks, earned a solid $32.4 million.
This is the 2nd time a James Cameron juggernaut was toppled from the top of the box office by a seemingly unlikely competitor. Titanic’s run at the top of the charts was ended in 1998 after 16 weeks by the thoroughly forgettable Lost in Space starring William Hurt and Matt LeBlanc.
Avatar, meanwhile, DID manage a 2nd place finish, adding another $23.6 million — bringing it’s 8-week total to $630 million.
Opening in 3rd was From Paris With Love. The movie, starring John Travolta and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, earned a less-than-spectacular $8.1 million.
Rounding out the top five movies were Edge of Darkness starring Mel Gibson in 4th with $7 million and Tooth Fairy starring Dwayne Johnson in 5th with $6.5 million.
Next weekend’s new releases include the Garry Marshall-directed rom-com Valentine’s Day, Percy Jackson and the Olympians: The Lightning Thief starring potential future Spider-Man Logan Lerman and The Wolfman starring Benicio Del Toro and Anthony Hopkins.
