Movie Review: All About SteveMary Horowitz (Sandra Bullock), a woman of words who is capable of providing endless amount of inexplicable information, is employed as a crossword constructor for a newspaper. According to her boss, she overworks and is encouraged to explore other areas of life and take time for herself. After several years of not socializing, her parents arrange a blind date with Steve (Bradley Cooper), a cameraman for a news crew. After one single glance, followed by a brief face-to-face meeting with Steve, Mary strongly believes that the chemistry is perfect between the two and that she has finally found her soul mate. She decides to do whatever and travel anywhere in the world to be with him.

Mary’s infatuation with Steve increases drastically, which is precipitated by the actions and encouragement of Hartman Huges (Thomas Haden Church) who assumes pleasure in causing drama for his cameraman at the news team. While breaking news occurs around the world Steve becomes progressively more annoyed when Mary’s stalking behaviour becomes intolerable.

Eventually Mary becomes the breaking news story and while she brings together her own friends and creates a support network of community members, Steve and Hartman begin to view her differently with more compassion and empathy for her uniqueness. The outcome; Steve and Hartman determine that people who are “not normal” and differ from following society’s norms are the individuals who stand out with distinctiveness.

The movie’s complication is that Bullock’s character Mary, who at times talks to herself and her pet hamster with her own unusual style, has not formally been diagnosed as psychotic. Rather she presents herself, to some extent, as delusional and significantly desperate for love. Bullock’s character is believable with an underlying comical tone. I suspect that audiences will be perplexed with her role, and be intrigued as the film is not entirely predictable. (6.5 out of 10)
